Barge Grounds on Reef at Fuvahmulah City Coastal Protection Project Site. A barge carrying boulder rocks for the coastal protection project at Fuvahmulah City ran aground on the reef, as confirmed by Ibrahim Aleef, spokesperson for the Fuvahmulah City council. The incident occurred on Friday, and efforts are now underway to refloat the barge.
The mishap took place near the makeshift jetty that the project contractor uses to transport materials for the ongoing construction. The contractor, the Denmark-based company MT Hojgaard, was awarded the contract in December 2021 to address the long-standing issue of beach erosion in the densely populated city.

The ambitious project, with an estimated cost of MVR 300 million, is being funded through a grant from the Netherlands, a loan from the Kuwait Fund for Urban Economic Development, and the state budget. Its centerpiece is the construction of a 2.6-kilometer seawall in the eastern part of Fuvahmulah, commencing from the city’s northern harbor.
Upon completion, this seawall will be the largest of its kind ever built in the Maldives, providing vital protection against coastal erosion and safeguarding the city’s infrastructure and population.
