On October 2nd, at 16:57hrs, the MNDF coastguard received a distress call about the General cargo vessel MSV ANNAI VAILANKANNI AROCKIA sinking.
The vessel “MSV Anaai Vailankane Arokia” sent a distress call to MRCC Villingili after taking on water. With 9 crew members on board, the vessel was en route from Tuticorin to Male’. She was carrying perishable items. Tuticorin is a major feeder port for perishable goods bound for the Maldives.
When the Distress call was acknowledged, the MRCC relayed it to the nearest target MCP Salzburg, which diverted to the incident site. The container ship arrived on the scene, coordinated, and successfully rescued the entire crew of the stranded vessel.
On October 7th, at 2300hrs, the Coast Guard Second Squadron escorted MCP Salzburg into Male’ Commercial Harbor with the 9 crew members rescued from the distressed vessel “MSV Anaai Vailankane Arokia Vennila.” It is believed that all nine members of the crew are in good health.
MCP SALZBURG (IMO: 9383481) is a General Cargo ship that was built in 2008 (13 years ago) and is currently sailing under the Cyprus flag. It has a carrying capacity of 7664 t DWT and a draught of 5.9 meters. Her overall length (LOA) is 117 meters, and she is 19.7 meters wide.
