The Maldives government has earmarked MVR 10 million in the 2024 state budget to address the lost sea area arising from the ongoing maritime boundary dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius.
Dhaandhoo MP Yaugoob Abdulla revealed this allocation during a recent meeting of the Parliament’s Budget Review Committee. He emphasized that the additional funding has been assigned to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) specifically for legal endeavors concerning the delineation of the Maldives-Mauritius maritime region.
The Committee granted approval for the AGO’s augmented budget, incorporating the extra MVR 10 million to address the maritime dispute. Additionally, the committee urged separate votes on other pertinent matters.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to reclaim and address the lost sea area due to the ongoing dispute between Mauritius and the Maldives. This commitment was made in conjunction with the case filed at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
Under the current administration, concerted efforts have been initiated toward recovering the disputed sea area from the day of assuming office. The government is actively engaged in further research to substantiate their case and move forward with the legal proceedings. This ongoing research aims to bolster the Maldives’ position in addressing the maritime dispute with Mauritius.
