Mahaa Jarraafu was launched by Royal IHC for the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on January 12, 2017, at the RMC shipyard in Qidong, China. A trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) is the first TSHD for MTCC, and the Easydredge 3700 is the biggest ship in the Easydredge® series. In terms of marine technology and workmanship, Royal IHC is a leader in the industry.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc officially received the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger “Mahaa Jarraafu” on October 1, 2017. Mr. Ibrahim Ziyath, the company’s ex-Chief Executive Officer, received the official documents of Dredger on behalf of MTCC.
The Maldives’ Mahaa Jarraafu’s most important points
MTCC expands its existing fleet of three IHC Beavers and enters the TSHD market with the 3,700cbm MAHAA JARRAAFU, which approximately translates as “giant dredger.”
The Easydredge® will be utilized on many islands and resorts in Asia for land reclamation, infrastructure, and beach replenishment projects. Those activities will help enhance the Maldives’ tourism economy and create jobs.
The Maldives’ government and ex-President Mr. Abdulla Yameen enthusiastically backed the purchase of the MAHAA JARRAAFU. It was announced in December 2014 that the vessel’s contract had been granted.
With a delivery time of 20 months from August 2015, this contract became effective. The ship’s keel was laid on August 25, 2016, and it’s anticipated to be delivered in April 2017, a few months ahead of schedule. Due to good coordination between our Qidong partner yard, MTCC and all IHC departments in Kinderdijk, we were able to achieve this goal.
Says IHC Project Manager Philip van den Broek.
A flexible approach
For enhanced speed and fuel efficiency, all Easydredge® ships are fitted with specially designed drilling equipment, such as the IHC dredge pumps and a slender hull that are at the cutting edge of technology. The Easydredge® 3700 is no exception.
Additionally, MAHAA JARRAAFU is equipped with “World Dredging” technology, which comprises an adjustable overflow, bottom doors, jet water system and a shore pumping installation. Thereby, the TSHD becomes more adaptable. An underwater pump and a long suction pipe allow the ship to dredge to a depth of 50 meters.
MTCC and Mahaa Jarraafu
Built by Royal IHC for the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the dredger costing $36 million was launched at the RMC Shipyard in Qidong, China in January of 2017.
The company began dredging in 1995 and it is one of the company’s key activities to this very day. The new dredger will join the Maldives’ biggest dredging fleet MTCC. Innovative technology to improve this service is a key priority for MTCC, which is owned by the government.
