The IMO training program on National Maritime Transport Policies has been revised and updated. The IMO training program has been newly revised and updated and is now available. The program assists developing countries like the Maldives in formulating and adopting it National Maritime Transport Policies (NMTPs).
The program developed for maritime transport policy capacity-building activities is delivered to a targeted audience in a seminar or workshop format, covering key topics on policy formulation and formulation of maritime transport policy, policy rationale, international maritime instruments, and the safety, security, economic, human element and environmental dimension of maritime transport policy formulation. The program provides a universal approach to IMO’s capacity-building and technical assistance requirements.
The program aims to provide standard knowledge and skills to participants and ensure understanding of States’ obligations when making maritime transport policy, and legislation on international maritime conventions and codes.
The content of the program was obtained from previously used materials prepared in 2015 and experiences from past delivered programs. The materials available in English, French, and Spanish are developed with the assistance of consultants and in collaboration with the World Maritime University (WMU).

The program can be benefitted to IMO state countries only upon request to the Director, Technical Cooperation Division at info@imo.org. It is required for interested member countries to establish an NMTP task force to promote cross-sectoral participation and facilitate communication at all levels.
IMO is promoting The NMTP concept as a good governance practice to guide decision-making, planning, and legislation in the maritime sector and for the country’s sustainable development. The program materials were used for the first time when delivering a workshop virtually to officials in Cameroon, they include senior officials from various ministries, departments, agencies, and other stakeholders.
The delivery of the program is part of the capacity-building mission and a commitment to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, Specifically, Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development, and Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
