MSS Chrome is a 43000 DWT bulk carrier, becoming the largest cargo vessel in the Maldives and the first bulk carrier by the company diversifying and stepping up its current operations. According to MSS, the vessel will be mainly responsible for carrying construction materials and will enable the construction materials to be readily available all the time in the Maldives. MSS further highlighted that construction materials from across the world will be available cheaper with the bulk carrier.
Earlier this month MSS revealed that for the first time the national flag was hoisted on the vessel, making it the largest vessel ever registered under the Maldivian flag.
The purchase is also a bigger milestone for MSS which was formed as a shipping line of the State Trading Organization (STO). The company was established in February 2020 with the purpose of reducing the price of goods imported into the Maldives. The bulk carrier will help save millions of dollars that would otherwise be sent abroad.
Acquiring the largest cargo vessel helps the company to near its goal of becoming a prominent shipping company in the region. The Maldives was once recognized for having the largest shipping fleet in the area, and MSS hopes to recapture that honor by continuing the legendary shipping line’s position as the region’s largest shipping firm.
