The endeavor to relocate Male’ port to K. Thilafushi island marks a departure from previous administrations’ initiatives, where discussions on port relocation were commonplace but lacked substantive progress. Previous plans under the PPM administration aimed to develop the port in Thilafushi, while subsequent changes by the MDP administration shifted focus to K. Gulhifalhu, resulting in delays and stagnation.
Under the current leadership, MPL is poised to overcome historical challenges and propel the port relocation project forward. With port design finalized and contractors appointed, MPL is gearing up to commence development work as early as March-April 2024. The ambitious timeline targets completion by 2026, signaling a significant milestone in the Maldives’ maritime infrastructure development journey.
As MPL and the government forge ahead with their collaborative efforts, stakeholders anticipate tangible benefits in terms of enhanced operational efficiency, increased storage capacity, and improved trade dynamics. The Male’ port relocation project heralds a new era of progress and prosperity, underscoring the commitment to building a resilient and sustainable maritime ecosystem in the Maldives.
