On August 19, 2021, the bulk carrier Navios Amaryllis ran aground on K.Rasfari reef. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 900 million rufiyaa claims would be made as compensation.
The assessment to determine the degree of the vessel’s damage to reef has been concluded. According to the evaluation, approximately a hectar of the Rasfari reef has been damaged.
The EPA will soon declare the charge and penalize the vessel based on the evidence presented. The total amount of compensation for damages could be around 914 million rufiyaa.
Navios Amaryllis, the 32415 GT bulk carrier, was sailing from Tuticorin to Saldanha Bay. Her main engine failed 12 nautical miles off Rasfari reef while she was transiting Maldivian territorial waters. She did not, however, broadcast alert to the coast station. On the 19th of August 2021, she ran aground. After which Distress alert was broadcasted.
Two tug boats with capacities of 150 and 50 tons were used for the salvage operation. And refloated her on August 29th, 2021.
Rasfari reef is a marine protected area. As a result, according to EPA, if the vessel intends to sail before reaching an agreement on the fine, she must pay 109 million rufiya.
