How does a hopper dredger Mahaa Jarraafu work?
Normally, it is fitted with one or two drag heads and one or two suction pipes. Slowly the drag head sweeps over the sand bed, sucking it up as though it were a big vacuum cleaner. Sand and water are pumped into the hopper of the dredging vessel and then pumped back out. Unwanted water is discharged through so-called “overflows.”
