33rd graduation of International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) was held earlier this month. 56 international law specialists from 37 countries around the world completing different courses at the institute. The graduation ceremony held on 1st July was a hybrid of both in person virtual session, the first of its kind at the institute.
In his speech during the graduation ceremony International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s Secretary General Kitack-Lim said, “Despite the turbulent times and the difficulties the pandemic has caused, you have achieved your goals. You, the Class of 2022, have been empowered, through knowledge and skills, to contribute effectively to the realization of IMO’s goals for a better world.”
He also highlighted the institute’s long lasting policy of reserving 50 per cent of the seats in the programs for eligible female applicants, promoting and preserving gender diversity and equality in the maritime sector.
IMLI, an institute established under the auspices of IMO, offers courses of different levels including master’s degree, Advance Diploma, research degree, and several specialized courses related to maritime law.
Furthermore IMLI offers short specialized courses required by governments and international bodies.
These courses focus on subjects taught by IMLI academic syllabi and are tailor made within the specific requirements of the specific organisation delivering them the latest developments on the law in their areas of interest.
With the 33rd graduation of International Maritime Law Institute, the total number of IMLI graduates numbered to more than 1,000 students from 151 countries which include Maldives as well. In addition to IMLI, IMO also established World Maritime University (WMU) for maritime studies.
IMO also offers short e-Learning courses, which can be undertaken by self-enrollment or by authorization. The courses are only for member countries with the purpose of increasing their capacity of Member States to effectively implement instructions given by IMO.
