MPL Set to Embark on Laamu Harbor Development Project: CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim unveils plans. In a significant move towards bolstering maritime infrastructure in the Maldives, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is gearing up to commence the development of a commercial port in Laamu Atoll, announced CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim.
Laamu Gaadhoo, a historically significant site, has recently been vacated by its inhabitants, who have relocated to Laamu Fonadhoo. Despite its abandonment, this remarkable location remains a captivating destination worthy of exploration.
Aligned with a presidential pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, MPL has been entrusted with spearheading the development of the commercial port in Laamu Atoll, with plans for its inauguration within the current year.
Ecocare Maldives, a local non-profit NGO, has voiced its apprehensions on its platform regarding the proposed establishment of a transshipment port and bunkering facility in Laamu Gaadhoo.
In an exclusive interview with PSM News, CEO Wajeeh shed light on the strategic significance of the chosen location for the port, Gaadhoo, Laamu Atoll. Gaadhoo’s strategic positioning makes it an ideal hub to cater primarily to the needs of the booming tourism industry in the Maldives.
Wajeeh emphasized the comprehensive range of services planned for the port, including bunkering and transshipment facilities, as well as state-of-the-art amenities such as storage and cruise terminals. This holistic approach aims to transform Gaadhoo into a bustling maritime hub, facilitating seamless operations for various industries.

In addition to the Laamu Atoll project (Laamu Harbor Development Project), Wajeeh provided updates on MPL’s ongoing ventures, particularly highlighting the progress of port development in Hithadhoo, Addu City. While bunkering services are already operational at the Hithadhoo port, similar services are on the horizon for the Kulhudhuffushi port in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, promising enhanced connectivity and efficiency in maritime trade across the archipelago.
MPL’s commitment to expanding and modernizing port infrastructure underscores its pivotal role in driving economic growth and facilitating trade in the Maldives. With ambitious projects like the Laamu Harbor Development on the horizon, MPL continues to solidify its position as a key player in the region’s maritime landscape.
